| French Fort Cove Nature Park |
Centrally located within the city and currently being operated as
a local nature and recreation park, French Fort Cove is a natural setting of forest, flora and fauna and water that holds
much of the story of the community’s commercial history...Buckley’s Lumber Mill, the grist mill settlement and
the old stone quarry.
With its rich flora, fauna
and birding, French Fort Cove is an important outdoor recreation
component of the Open River Ecomuseum. The riverfront is
accessible via canoe, kayak and paddle boat rentals. Spectacular views reward the visitor in any season from a network of forested walking, hiking and biking trails. As darkness falls, historic legend takes over when the more adventurous visitor is invited to Dare the Dark for the Headless Nun Tour.
Key Goals and Strategies • Elevate
status from a local community park to a major Ecomuseum destination site. • Ensure French Fort Cove remains
a pleasant outdoor experience which is accessible to everyone. • Upgrade and enhance infrastructure, orientation,
signage and trail diversity. • Enhance the numerous interpretive components that exist to strengthen the visitor
experience.
