| Canadian Point |
Canadian Point, located off Brown Road in Miramichi-Chatham, is the site of a recently decommissioned city waster water
lagoon pond. As part of the Miramichi Open River Ecomuseum network, the lagoon will be remediated and transformed into a naturalist
setting as a marsh and wildlife area with an emphasis on bird habitat and a bird sanctuary. The relevance of the site dates
back to the 17th century when it was settled by French families for a 50-year period between the late 1600s and early 1700s.
A promontory jutting into the river from its southern shore across from French Fort Cove, Canadian Point embraces the
enjoyment of nature and birding in a setting of environmental stewardship. Multi-use trails lead visitors from the shore road
to a naturalized setting where birds and wildlife thrive. The birding centre affords excellent viewing and interpretation
of nesting habitats.
Key Goals and Strategies • Convert Canadian Point to a public use site. • Introduce
plant communities to create a productive marsh and wildlife habitat. • Leverage the site's natural assets to interpret
nature and environmental sustainability.
